Pegasus vs Flames Matchup

Press Play for a cool song to go along with this review ;)

The first of the Remix Non Chinese Basketball League (NCBL) 2008 Quarter Final tie will kickoff at 10.00 AM, 3 August 2008 in Pusat Rekreasi JKKK Balaking, Cheras. The matchup – NCBL 2007 Defending Champions Pegasus versus Flames.

While Pegasus are heavily favoured to win this matchup, they might be missing 5 players due to Petronas Team selections. Masri, Saifurizan (Panje), Norsultan (Lolo), Rozaini (Aboy), and Imran (Bo). This loss will leave Pegasus with only one big man in Thaufiq (John).

Flames on the other hand will have their full lineup available. They will be banking on their gargantuan superstar Alex Edwards to quash Pegasus’s hopes of achieving an NCBL three-peat. Below is the team breakdown:

Pegasus

Strength: Shut down Defense, Quick Fast break, good team chemistry, deep bench, low post scoring.
Weakness: Slow start, foul prone big men, may be missing 5 big men for the matchup.

Summary: Coach Sham will be looking to rely on shooting and will be going small if they miss their “Petronas Five”. PG Azizul (Jijun), SG Khairil (Kei) and Aznorizam (Baby), SF Amin and C Thaufiq will be playing the major role of scoring for them.

Should Pegasus have the services of the “Petronas 5″ this weekend, Pegasus should have a more balanced attack by going to their big men, scoring from the low post or feeding the wings or cutters for a shot.

Defense is Pegasus’ trademark, and it should be in full force this game.

Flames

Strength: Good team chemistry, an (almost) unstoppable center, good team hustle, average defense
Weakness: Lack of execution, no pure shooter

Summary: Flames is a veteran team, and their team chemistry is an A-plus. Under the leadership of Fairil (TV Show KL-ites remember?) and Aiman, Flames has been a mainstay in the Non Chinese Basketball tournaments. However, Flames has not won any titles, and they are looking to break the jinx this year.

The addition of Alex Edward in the lineup is inavaluable to the team, and Edward should be the focal point for Flames’ offense. At the same time, the 6’6″ Edward is a big presence in defense, and he should have a few blocks in this game.

My Prediction – It’s going to be biased. Pegasus should win this one. If they don’t have the “Petronas 5″, the scoreline should be less than 5 points. If all or some of “Petronas 5″ is in the game, the margin should be around 10 points.

  3. pegasusbigboss Says:

Ken – company tak bagi budget untuk kamera la. Phone pun takde kamera…kekekeke.

Mislan – Tq for the info. Zun dgn Imran tak pegi sekali ke? Kalau kita jumpa semi, senang sikit. lol..

  4. ikram - flames Says:

malangnya flames kalah by 3 points je. With Pet 5 (i guess). I like your report but I have to argue about the Pure shooter statement.

Kitorang mmg takde la shooter shooter, tapi semua kongsi shoot. Almost everyone can shoot in this team. There would usually be 3-4 guys with 10-15 points. And it changes. It works for us. Everyone has a job to do.

The offense leaders are alex and fairil and we use them to open up spaces and start plays. Without a doubt, they are the key players, but not key to the point we’ll collapse lah.

Today we managed to stop pegasus from running amok buat fast break all day long. Tall guys with running feet. Not so nice to defend against but we did good. It was hard out-rebounding them. The only person worth giving a fight for a rebound was Alex, but we had aiman and fairil outjumping pegasus as well on occasions.

Pegasus made most of their free throws in the 3rd quarter.

We outscored pegasus on three quarters, but they outscored us enough on the third to take the lead and hold it (with their life).

Great game. Would love to go up against them again. Hopefully soon too.

  5. blaze Says:

Ikram, its quite different in having everyone as average shooters compared to having a pure shooter.

having a pure shooter really opens up the floor for your cutters i.e Fairil & Aiman, and definately would make teams think before doubling your post players i.e Alex & Andre. It helps alot for teams like yours.

against an average shooter, defenses would collapse on the others… means you only get to shoot when Fairil slash & dishes it off (or off pick and rolls).

but having a pure shooter, would open up a whole new dimension for your team :)

maybe next year you’d be that player for your team perhaps? would make Flames worlds better.

  6. thoyol Says:

yup, blaze is spotted on there.

  7. mr_aboy Says:

Whatever it is..it was an open game and either team could have won it..my respects to Flames, good game guys!

Hope we meet up again soOn

ps: My jaw still bengkak lor -clashing wit Ben hahaha

  8. pegasusbigboss Says:

Ikram – Great game! Hope to meet again nxt year!
In regards to the pure shooter thingy, a pure shooter is like BJ Armstrong, John Paxton of the Great Bulls Dynasty. The reason why they’re part of the Bulls at the time was to provide a consistent outside & perimeter shooting. Even Jordan couldn’t do it all ;)

Blaze – a good sum up! Thanks!

Mr. Aboy – welcome to the blog. Tq for the comment.

  9. blaze Says:

is it just me, or there’s just too much occurance where someone’s jaw meets Ben’s elbows/shoulder/knee/head/whatever?

    cheapo!

  10. timbernett Says:

hahaha! Mr.Aboy… unlucky you had to go into ben that day, I thought you fainted man… anyways hope to see ya all again next year and in open tourneys. Good luck in the semis. Peace.

  11. timbernett Says:

Flames dun need a “pure” shooter… we need some “sharp” shooters that can cut and shoot the ball into the hole. hahaha! (and we already have a few, just need polishing here and there) ^__^

  12. Ben Says:

BoY- hope your bengkak jaw gets better dude. My bad,aku tengok kau launch at full speed towards me,aku pun takut sial.

Blaze:unfortunately I have my fair share of scars and nail digging by others too that which is far more painful than my occasional bumps.unfortunately for some, they gotta learn to know their surroundings n their teamates should call the for the impending screen.

Anyways, congrats pegasus.all the best in the semis…

  13. ikram Says:

next year? boleh la. have to lose a hell lot of kilograms. no more kerepok lekor man.

well, blaze is right. I guess we have a rotating sharp shooter kot? some days someone is hot someone is not haha. but after i sinked one 3 pointer, jijun didnt give me enough room to comfortably release a shot, but that sorta opened up for alex/andre down low for the pass since jijun’s coming up a bit more created space.

weh aboy, good game weh. serious tak sabar nak round 2 (although for some players it will be round 3)

you guys can really jump. Aku box out pun celaka lompat atas aku. hah.

    good luck in the semis.

bigbosspegasus – weh, lu nak heart attack masa first half kan? kalau pengsan aku tak reti administer CPR weh. hehehe. See you around your court if i swing by KL .

  14. pegasusbigboss Says:

Timbernett, Ben & Ikram – You guys have a great team this year, so stick together and improve together. If you do, Flames will be a team to beat in the future ;)

Ikram – heart attack first half?Sebenarnya sampai sekarang masih terasa. Ni nak lwn Phantoms lagi2 la. Standby ambulance next weekend for me .. lol :D

  15. blaze Says:

Ben, there’s a difference between a legit screen compared to shoving your elbow into someone. I hope you look it up in the rule book. Might earn you some popularity points.

but then again, you already knew that.

In regards of the “sharp(er)” shooters, i still say its nowhere near the impact of having a PURE SHOOTER.

Sharp shooters are like the razifs, the amiruls, and to some extent some of your players. What differentiates their effectiveness compared to a PURE SHOOTER (ala the Yasiers, Imrans, Zunnasri, Ramesh) is that people do not extend and close out on them as much. Hence not opening up floor space for their teammates.

  16. timbernett Says:

blaze – Please refer Art 33. Page 34 of Fiba Rules 2008.

Please be mindful of your accusations.

    Peace.

  17. blaze Says:

i dont have to refer to the rules, but i have.

but whatever your friend did (or did not, depends on who you’re with) is blatantly a foul and unsportsmanlike as most of us can attest to.

he can keep playing that way, not that i mind. But one of these days he’s gonna get it from someone, and all i’m going to say is.. its about time, and i told you so.

you dont need to worry about me, disregard my comments if you cant take it. Its not meant for you.

people are getting too sensitive in herreeeee…

  18. Kptm Says:

Yo blaze, Ya maybe that ben guy is dirty, but thats basketball ma fren, u see the nba, wnba etc almost all of them use elbow, and bens not the only one to play dirty, there are a bunch in ncbl and even national players play dirty, its just that you probly get hit by ben. , correct or not… as the joker said – why so serious? (its basketball)

  19. timbernett Says:

oik… hang smua tak habis-habis kat sini hahaha!

kptm – guys, just wanna say good game we had. looking forward in meeting you guys next year or sooner.

Does any NC team participate in open tourneys?? Sultan Cup Div2 is coming up very soon, mostly after Raya from the looks of thing.
Go to http://www.selangorbasketball.com (or click my name) for updates once in a while, forms and details will be available once finalise.

    Peace.

  20. blaze Says:

KPTM – i thank you for your comments, but sorry mate, i havent been playing competitive basketball in NC tournaments for a couple years now. So i have yet to be hit by our beloved friend as you said.

to me, everything is fair game as long as the giver would not complain when the other team gives them the same kind of on-court souvenirs. But as i see it, Flames are like girls on the court, always whining to the refs on every single play, despite being one of the not so clean team out there.

    there i said it =)

  21. fairil Says:

Blaze you have quite a few comments huh? How is it that we are like girls when other teams are complaining about how rough we play? Including yourself? Come on dude, as an x player before like yourself, u should know games get rough. I’ve encountered countless times ppl elbowing, pulling my shirt, stepping on my toes, trying to injure me. But i don’t complain. Its just how the game is. At the end of the day, everyone shakes hands and everything is cool. Ben maybe rough, but there are tons more dirtier players in the NCBL for you to complain about.

  22. trey Says:

Fairil, relax mate. we cant control what people gonna say in here.

anyways, Flames plays tough so biasa lah ada contact here and there. But i do agree that Ben gives out alot of cheap shots and unnesassary roughness. But i’m not complaining. Players choose how they play, what happens next is up to the referees & the opponents. Kalau jadi gaduh, what do you expect? kalau lawan main kotor balik, what do you expect? kalau referee starts calling small small stuffs against you, sendiri juga yg buat.

so its all about how we want to play the game.

personally, i like it when people throw cheapos on me, it gives license for me to do the same back on them. he he he.

  23. ikram Says:

aku takde la plak panggil blaze cam pompuan tapi tak sedap ah kau cakap team aku cam pompuan. hoeleh.

and I dono what planet are you on. We’re not a dirty team. What the hell. U see us shoving knees? pulling jerseys? pulling down opponents on rebounds with the off hand?

Check your facts before you accuse my team for playing dirty blaze. And like Trey say, we play tough but we dont push you.

  24. fairil Says:

    *fire breathing flame*
haha. trey ku relek ni brudder. hold me back, hold me back!! haha. but yeah, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just dont understand why flame boys are the only targets for playing “rough” or taking cheap shots.

  25. Kptm Says:

hey timernett what number u in flames??

What is this blaze, u like also complaining making u like girl, its just basketball if its dirty the ref will call it if he don’t then that just basketball ,live wit it….

  26. trey Says:

yea ikram doesnt push you, he plays like a girl :P

  27. observer Says:

    blaze,

take ur fail n go play chess.

no elbowing there. i’m quite certain of that.

  28. pegasusbigboss Says:

OK guys, let’s give it a rest. Tell me what you think of the Finals? Who will win?

  29. ikram Says:

    HAHA, siot trey. :)

  30. ikram Says:

sape menang? ntah la, sebab aku kenal big boss, jaga hati, cakap pegasus menang ah. hehehe.

No one is unstoppable in the league. Just stick to your defensive assignments and no one can penetrate pegasus.

Swoosh has some holes at the back. In terms of speed, both can run the court at will.

So maybe it’ll come down to defense, and rebounds. sapa dapat banyak 2nd chance shots sure menang la (obviously la right).
