2009 Non-Chinese Basketball League Preseason News I
Written by pegasusbigboss on February 19, 2009 – 12:13 am -Believe it or not, we are about 2 months away from NCBasketball’s premier annual league – the Non-Chinese Basketball League (NCBL), 2009 edition. Some teams are still on autopilot, while others are polishing their cannons and scribbling the strategy board.
This first preseason news comes from the League itself, and this is interesting:
Quoted from Yaz45 on NCBasketball Circles99:
Abg Kerol cakap ramai team request utk bagi limitation max 2 national / ex-national per team. So this season mungkin akan implement max 2 national / ex-national per team OR per game. Per team di mana cuma max 2 national bole register in a team. Per game di mana xde max no of national bole register in a team tetapi max cuma 2 saja yg bole main di dalam sesebuah game.
Translated:
Mr. Khairul (Anuar Jailani – Chairman of NCBL and MABA Non-Chinese Development) has informed that many teams (participating in the NCBL) has requested to limit the number of national / ex-national players per team OR per game to 2. Therefore, the rule of only 2 national / ex-national may be implemented this season.Per Team means max 2 national/ex-national players can be registered to any one team, whereby Per Game, no more than 2 national/ex-national players can play at any time during the game, but no limit as to how many national/ex-national players can be registered to a team.
This ruling will impact the defending champion and perennial powerhouse Swoosh the most as 3 of their players, namely “Abi” Guganeswaran, Kader and Yasier are national (or ex-national) players.
This player cap is meant to create a more competitive league, with a “smaller win margin” for the minnows against the powerhouse.
I’ll tell you my opinion on the next post, but until then, lets hear yours. Should we implement this national/ex-national player cap?
Sorry, there are no polls available at the moment.Related Posts

This topic was very very debatable in Selangor Sultan Cup, i suggest don’t start haha! plus right when you mean national / ex-national… senior or junior? I think in the non Chinese community tak ramai represented the National squad (not taking into account the NC petronas/ nc national team).
So in Sultan Cup div2, rules are national or ex national cannot play (only the national senior squad who played in reknown international tourney like sea games… tak kira invitational…) so meaning those who represented junior, nc, or invitational level still eligible to play but of course in sultan more confusing with state player rule
– Organiser must specifically explain this as a single loop hole will result in disatisfaction and complaints… it took sultan cup div 2 to only rectify its problem in 08, where names are listed to those who cant play…
My suggestion – these rules you implement also wont work… organiser obviously will close one eye and its not easy proving players play here or what not… so to avoid people bitching about like “ala… dio ade tu, ade ni, tu yang kito kalah” or as always in the chinese community say “aiya, they have national playr blah blah no means we win…” kinda crap… myself just play… isnt thats how the NC community is improving year by year cause they play against the best, yeh it might be slow but isnt it showing dividends? the nc community is improving fyi… so why lower the level? ^__^

Actually MB Cup has a limitation of 2 max national/exnational/jr/maba trainees during the years where scorekeys had a handful of them.
The organizer basically just list down the ncballers that related, a listname like sultan cup 2 last year (which is way2 lesser if u minus the chinese players)
Obviously the rules were there to prevent Scorekeys, who were at that time, full with “maba’s players”, thanks to yaz, hilmi, and wan badang.
So in the end, it wasnt that hard to ‘clarify’ and implement the ‘limitation’ for ncb scene, and it is doable.
Personally, I don’t really care about this ‘new rule’ because it doesn’t really affect me.
Theres pro n cons for both sides but I’d say let ‘em play.

As always, an in-depth & critical comment from Timbernett (I love your thoughts man!)
I do agree with you on this one. The Sultan Cup has 2 divisions, and I guess it will be tough to split NCBL to 2 divisions (though it is not impossible).
Mislan, regarding MB Cup limitation, when was it implemented? I do remember in 2006 (if I’m not mistaken, the year UiTM played Pegasus in the Final), UiTM had Helmi, Yasier & Kadier in the squad, and Pegasus were quashed like a bug in the Finals.

bagus ada limit national player. lagi-lagi muka sama je yang menang. team-team lain macam takde harapan untuk jadi champion

kalo mcm tu… pi cari liga registration fee RM10 ringgit, hadiah tpt pertama–> voucher jesco… mungkin ko jadi campion. ^__^

To set a limit on National/JrNational/MABA players…..hmmmm
I think only one team will have problems with this rule (Swoosh).
Well you can take it two ways. One is that by playing against them and most prob losing, u can gain experience, learn from them and soon beat them but the thing is thats very unlikely espically, playing 5 national calibre players. How is it fair, how are other teams going to develop by getting trashed by 5 national calibre players. And by them being isolated in one team this may disencourage other teams to compete.
Its ok to have national players in a team but there has to be a limit, its going to be like the EPL where the richest team is most likely to win. But in the NBA they give the worst team of the season a better chance in getting the best new talent in the draft. This is unrealistic as teams aren’t all about fairness. If there is a limit then Swoosh would only have 2 of there 5 starting meaning that they would be able to find new players and devlop them with the existing Nplayers. Then Nplayers will look for new teams and by them joining, the team can learn from them and hence develop – much like the idea of NC development.
Is it a Skill cap- possible but its for the greater good, by each team playing at a similar competitive level they will be able to raise the standard of the NCleague. What is needed to raise up the standard is to also have a u-24 league so that the youth can play and hopefully raise up to a national level by playing games.
The thing with Nplayers is that they play in Agong cup etc so it not like were isolating them. As for other people NCBL might be the only tourney they play in, so it should be at the right standard.
Neverthe less It should be decided not by the organisation but up to the participants. There should be a survey for all teams. As at the end of the day the teams are what make the league.

DestinationUnknown.. Thank you for voicing your opinion
With long term player development in mind, a “skill/talent cap” and spreading the talent (i.e. – National players being spread to different teams) is a good idea. That way, there won’t be a monopoly of talents which will end up with one team winning it all year after year (case in point – Petronas team in the Petronas Cup).
As for survey regarding this talent cap, it should be in motion during the managers’ meeting.
Again, thanks for your insight on this topic

Cuz bile meeting ncbl?

It was implemented during the years where scorekeys aren’t able to participate or absent in MB Cup.
I dont think Scorekeys were in MB Cup before they won it with UiTM/Scorekeys in 2006 (is it 2006?).
Do you really think that they were absent during those previous years due to the distance of shah alam and seremban? If thats the reason, then why they are able to send in a team in 2008 and 2007?
The limit of national players is obviously directed to certain teams such as Scorekeys in MB Cup, and Swoosh in NCBL.
March 4th, 2009 at 1:42 pm
Actually there’s still a limit or ‘list of names’ of a max of 2 players from the list, in MB Cup.
They usually hand it out during the managers meeting.
Tahun 2007 ade. 2006 takde sebab player2 tu main ngan itm, so as a host uitm abandon that rule for that year only.

if we limited just 2 national o ex national player in a team o per game is no point, then why we call it NCBL??we can just name it MB cup, because MB cup also limiting national o state player.
By the way,if we wan 2 do it this way, mayb we can do it more professional like other country league, all team got the chance to vote for the national player to for their team with allowance per game,at least RM 50 per game. This all will be another better way to improve our NCBL o malaysia basketball level.
how do u guys think about this?

Hello all! It’s great to see enthusiastic people involved in construtive discussions about our local basketball scene.
I personally like to see more veteran players get involved in the local basketball scene. Most of the veteran players have given up competitive basketball and now concentrating more on golf and fishing. He. He. He.
About the limitation and banning of national/ex-national players, this topic never has an ending. What’s with the fear of national/ex-national players? They can’t help it if they’re good & they would definitely like to participate & get involved with our local tournaments as well. Get rid of the fear and dirty politics please. Be a good sportsman & let them play! They want to join in the fun too.

Mislan – Thank you for the explanation regarding the MB CUp limitation. I had a rough idea of the limitation of national/ex-national players, but you cleared the air. I’m just a little perturbed when Nationals Kadier, Yasier, Hilmi, and the tall guy (whashisname) were sporting the UiTM jersey in 2006.
Selangor – The National/Ex-National limitation is being hotly debated at the moment, and your we do appreciate your opinion. However, I have to disagree with the RM50/game allowance for the National players.. where got money maa.. lol.
Abg Syed Down Town – thank you for dropping a comment to my humble little “hut”
I do agree that the NCBasketball community should get rid of the fear & dirty politics in the game. Be proud that we have Nationals in our league (raises the standard of the competition), not chase them away!

[...] Feedback on the proposed implementation of National/Ex-National Player Cap for NCBL 2009 Written by pegasusbigboss on March 11, 2009 – 9:18 pm – My post on the NCBL 2009 Preseason News 1 did garner a lot of interest & feedbacks. The topic is about the proposal/suggestion calling for the implementation of National/Ex-National player (from here on termed “Nationals”) cap, whereby participating teams of the NCBL can only include a number of Nationals in their team. Read the original post here. [...]

Cuz i kinda agree with selangor’s suggestion on the rm50 allowance. Somehow it raises the level of the game bcoz some of the players are be paid to play. All of the nationals are paid by their own states/team to represent the state/team in Agong Cup/NBL. Johor has the most $ so they bought the best players & eventually became the champion. Paie of Stallions started this when he pays Hilmi & Sassinderan some $ to play for Stallons. Somehow it benefited them if not they won’t take it. Although rm50 is too little but my point is putting $ & sponsorship into the league, teams $ players is where we are heading to in the future. U too sponsored Pegasus’s jerseys right? Its $$$. :>

Yaz – providing players with allowance is a good step forward. However, it is viable only if there is a structured approach – meaning there is a set of rules & regulations regarding this allowance.
If there is no set of rules & regulations regarding player salary/allowance, especially with the amateur status of the league, the league will be dominated & monopolized by teams with a larger budget.
This doesn’t mean that I disagree. As the matter of fact, it should be the goal of the teams to reach that level. Whereby teams are well managed, and are able to find their own sponsors & further pay their players. Just that there has to be a set of rules to ensure that the league is not monopolized by a certain few teams only.
Lastly – I did sponsor Snipers & Pegasus’s jersey (Snipers when the boys & I were with Snipers) as an early investment to get them “on their feet”. Since they won the NCBL the first time, they have learned to stand up on their own, manage themselves & win tourneys to buy new jerseys… hehehehe. I am very proud (to say the least) with what Pegasus has achieved.
